The Pharisees came up with laws of their own. What they believed God would want.
Have you ever done that?
Changed the rules of trust to justify talking behind someone’s back? Rearranged the wording on generosity to build bigger barns? Made exceptions for yourself and condemned another for the very same thing? Raised your expectations for them while you remain the same?
Reading the rulings against Jesus is a sobering examination. According to their law, Jesus deserved death, and they deserved their hearts desire. How will we follow the perfect law of God without manipulating what Jesus has said? Without taking justice and mercy into our own hands?
There’s no other way but the way Jesus demonstrates. Taking the form of a bondservant, not seeking to serve Himself. Humbling Himself in obedience, not thinking for Himself. Jesus put His life under the Father’s rule even unto death.
Is it possible we’re believing something Jesus didn’t say? Adding or taking away from what God clearly states? Using His words to serve and satisfy some need for our own intention, reputation, or pleasure?
Father, forgive me. Help me no longer conform to this world but be transformed by the renewing of my mind, that I may prove what is Your good, acceptable, perfect will. Amen.
Can’t even grasp how He made Himself poor so we could be rich.
