Love Grows

That your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment.
Philippians 1:9

Did you know that godly love grows? We’re not born with a capacity to love unconditionally or sacrificially. Love doesn’t grow with time or experience. Love grows through the knowledge of God and the discernment of His Spirit. The more we know God, who is love, the more we grow in love.

Today I’m faced with pain. The knowledge of God’s love is breaking my heart. I thought I was loving a friend . . . but I wasn’t. I lacked compassion and wanted to control the situation. Love is not speaking harsh words sweetly.

To abound, is to be full of (I had to look it up). God is not working to make me sound more loving, or act more loving . . . but to become more and more loving.

In some way, we’ll fail at love today. But we can’t let that stop us from growing in love. We can’t get stuck in ourselves. Repent. God has more for you, an endless supply of patient, kind, ever abounding love.

The Helper, the Spirit of God will help us grow in love when we return, and turn again to His loving knowledge and holy discernment.

Pause & Pray: Loving Lord, help my love grow more and more in all knowledge and discernment. Thank you Jesus.
