Burnt offerings on the altar soothed the Lord.
How so? Like when the kitchen is cooking with the aroma of garlic chicken? As lilac perfumes the air in early Summer? Or the fireplace crackles in winter?
Whenever I imagine God in the Old Testament soothed by a pleasing aroma. I think of steaks sizzling on the grill or fresh baked bread rising in the oven. As if God’s mouth were watering over a meal that’s coming.
Meditating a little longer, I hear it more clearly. Jesus on the cross soothed God’s wrath. All those many burnt sacrifices pointing to the day when we would be saved.
“He brought me to the banqueting house, and His banner over me was love.”
